Body Language

Your body language says a lot to recruiters. Below are a few tips to keep in mind during the event.

1. Have A Firm Handshake

Don’t make your grip too firm, just enough to provide a degree of confidence. If you’re a little nervous and the palm of your hand is sweaty, quickly wipe it off (on the back of the other hand works well) before you shake.

2. Be Mindful Of Posture

Maintain a strong posture while talking to employers. Don’t slouch, but rather stand tall and confidently. Step forward (or stand if you are sitting on your stool) to greet your visitor. Crossing your arms or having your hands in your pockets could convey that you are closed off or disinterested. Make sure your body is facing outward, not towards your wall. Be mindful of personal space. Personal space varies by culture, but in the US the typical distance is an arms’s length away.

3. Maintain Eye Contact

It’s perfectly fine to break your gaze every now and again, just make sure that you’re giving a good amount of uninterrupted eye contact to your visitors. If there are a group of people viewing your work, give the person who’s asking you questions your attention and then split your gaze between the various people in the group.

4. Smile!

Have a friendly presence when interacting with employers. Use facial expressions to show you’re interested and engaged in what they are saying. Remember to have fun, be genuine, and loosen up. This helps establish rapport with employers. While you may certainly be tired—don’t yawn!

5. Avoid Fidgeting

…but use effective hand gestures! While you may be nervous, you want to avoid fidgeting with your hands, an object, etc. Fidgeting can be distracting to the person you are speaking with. If you do tend to fidget, hold your hands together loosely in front of you, or put one hand in your pocket. Find a solid stance to avoid rocking or swaying.

6. Relax And Breathe

Take a deep breath! You’ve already put in all of the hard work and now is the time to showcase it. Have a favorite snack you like to eat or a song that calms you down? Have those near you at the event.
