Joining a professional organization is a great way to meet people, build your creative network, and learn about successes of and challenges facing the industry or area. Professional organizations generally charge a membership fee, but offer members benefits in return, and many organizations have reduced rates for students. This list is not comprehensive, and the inclusion of an organization on this list does not mean CPD has endorsed it. The list is organized by professional area. Please notify CPD of broken links.

Animation

International Animated Film Society (ASIFA)

ASIFA-Hollywood is a California non-profit organization established over thirty five years ago to promote and encourage the art and craft of animation.

Women in Animation

Women in Animation envisions a world in which women share fully in the creation, production and rewards of animation, resulting in richer and more diverse entertainment and media that move our culture forward.  Women in Animation brings together a global community of animation professionals to empower and support women in the art, science and business of animation by increasing access to resources, creating opportunities for education, encouraging strong connections between individuals, and inspiring excellence.


Entertainment Industry

Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP)

Founded in 1972, by a small group of television commercial production companies concerned with a single issue, today’s AICP has grown to represent exclusively, the interests of companies that specialize in producing commercials on various media - film, video, digital - for advertisers and agencies. AICP members account for 85 percent of all domestic commercials aired nationally, whether produced for traditional broadcast channels or non-traditional use.

Directors Guild of America (DGA)

Founded in 1936 when a small group of the best-known directors of the time joined together to protect the economic and creative rights of directors in motion pictures, the DGA is the world’s preeminent organization representing directors and members of the directorial team, including Directors, Assistant Directors, Unit Production Managers, Associate Directors, Stage Managers and Production Associates – 15,000 strong worldwide.

Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) 

Founded in 1979, IFP is the largest and oldest not-for-profit dedicated to independent film. IFP champions the future of storytelling by connecting artists with essential resources at all stages of development and distribution. IFP fosters a vibrant and sustainable independent storytelling community, represents a growing network of 10,000 storytellers around the world, and plays a key role in developing 350 new feature and documentary works each year. During its 35-year history, IFP has supported over 8,000 projects and offered resources to more than 20,000 filmmakers.

International Cinematographers Guild 

The International Cinematographers Guild represents the most talented camera professionals and publicists in the world. The technicians and artisans in our union are the creators of the visual images on the big screen, the television screen and - as we move into the 21st century - our computer screen. That’s why we’re so excited about offering this site to our members, everyone in our industry and to people everywhere who want to know more about what we do.  International Cinematographers Guild members - Directors of Photography, Camera Operators and Assistants, Visual Effects Supervisors, Still Photographers, Publicists and more - are part of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.

Motion Picture Editors Guild (MPEG) 

MPEG is a national labor organization currently representing over 7,300 freelance and staff post-production professionals. Ours is the world’s premiere craft guild that sets the standards for excellence in the post-production industry. The requirements to become a member of the Guild and placed on our Industry Experience Roster ensures the highest level of professionalism.  As Local 700 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), an international union over 100 years old, we are allied with some 500 affiliated locals in the United States and Canada with a combined membership of more than 110,000. This strength increases our collective power at the bargaining table and results in better contracts with superior benefits.

Writers Guild of America-East (WGAE)

WGAE is a labor union of thousands of professionals who are the primary creators of what is seen or heard on television and film in the U.S., as well as the writers of a growing portion of original digital media content.  Our members write everything from big budget movies to independent films, late night comedy/variety shows to daytime serials, broadcast and radio news, web series, documentaries, and animation. The WGAE works on their behalf to promote and protect the professional and artistic interests of this diverse community.

Writers Guild of America-West (WGAW) 

WGAW is a labor union composed of the thousands of writers who write the television shows, movies, news programs, documentaries, animation, videogames and new media content that keep audiences constantly entertained and informed.


Environmental Design

American Institute of Architecture (AIA) 

Based in Washington, D.C., AIA has been the leading professional membership association for licensed architects, emerging professionals, and allied partners since 1857. With nearly 300 state and local chapters, the AIA serves as the voice of the architecture profession and the resource for our members in service to society. The AIA sponsors hundreds of continuing education experiences to help architects maintain their licensure, sets the industry standard in contract documents with more than 100 forms and contracts used in the design and construction industry, provides countless web-based resources, conducts market research and provides analysis of the economic factors that affect the business of architecture. 

American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS)

AIAS is an independent, nonprofit, student-run organization dedicated to providing unmatched programs, information, and resources on issues critical to architectural education. The mission of the AIAS is to promote excellence in architectural education, training, and practice; to foster an appreciation of architecture and related disciplines; to enrich communities in a spirit of collaboration; and to organize students and combine their efforts to advance the art and science of architecture.

American Society of Interior Designers (ASID

Founded in 1975, ASID is the oldest, largest and leading professional organization for interior designers. The rich, vibrant history of the organization goes back much further, to the founding of its predecessor organizations, the American Institute of Interior Designers (AID) and the National Society of Interior Designers (NSID). ASID is a community of people: designers, industry representatives, educators and students who are committed to interior design.

Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA)

Celebrating more than 40 years of research-based innovations, EDRA exists to advance and disseminate environmental design research, thereby improving understanding of the inter-relationships of people with their built and natural surroundings toward creation and curation of environments responsive to human needs. EDRA’s roots are strong and flourishing.

The Furniture Society

The Furniture Society is a nonprofit, educational organization founded in 1996 and sponsors a variety of programs that contribute to the education and enrichment of members and the public.  Built on a tradition of volunteerism, The Furniture Society works to realize its mission through educational programs, publications, exhibitions, recognition of excellence in the field, and annual conferences. With members from across the United States and Canada, as well as numerous other countries around the world, the Furniture Society represents a broad cross-section of furniture makers, museum and gallery professionals, scholars, journalists, and others involved with the field of furniture in many different ways.

International Association of People-Environment Studies (IAPS) 

IAPS is the forum for scholars who have an interest in an interdisciplinary exchange and in the study of the transactions and interrelationships between people and their socio-physical surroundings (including built and natural environments) and the relation of this field to other social and biological sciences and to the environmental professions.

International Council of Design

Ico-D is a non-profit, non-partisan, member-based network that leads creatively by facilitating dialogue between design platforms including professional, educational and promotional categories. Members of ico-D have current perspective on contemporary contexts, and an eye for collaboration across disciplines and with diverse global and local communities. As an interface between the community of professional designers and the wider public, ico-D promotes design excellence, and upholds the importance of design as a key medium for social change.

International Interior Design Association (IIDA)

IIDA is a professional networking and educational Association of 13,000 Members in 10 specialty practice forums and 33 Chapters globally.  IDA was founded in 1994 as the result of a merger of the Institute of Business Designers (IBD); the International Society of Interior Designers (ISID); and the Council of Federal Interior Designers (CFID). The merger allowed for an international association with Interior Designers worldwide.

American Art Therapy Organization

The American Art Therapy Association, Inc. (Association) is an organization of professionals dedicated to the belief that making art is healing and life enhancing. International Sculpture Center (ISC) 

ISC is a member-supported, nonprofit organization founded in 1960 to champion the creation and understanding of sculpture and its unique, vital contribution to society. Members include sculptors, collectors, patrons, architects, developers, journalists, curators, historians, critics, educators, foundries, galleries, and museums—anyone with an interest in and commitment to the field of sculpture.


Game Design

International Game Developers Association (IGDA) 

As an international organization, we are a global network of collaborative projects and communities comprised of individuals from all fields of game development - from programmers and producers to writers, artists, QA and localization. We bring together developers at key industry conferences, in over 90 Chapters and in Special Interest Groups (SIGs) to improve their lives and their craft. We advocate on behalf of our membership to ensure quality of life, perpetuation of our craft and preparing the next generation of developers. 

Women in Games International (WIGI)

WIGI, made up of both female and male professionals, works to promote the inclusion and advancement of women in the global games industry.  WIGI promotes diversity in video game development, publishing, media, education and workplaces, based on a fundamental belief that increased equality and camaraderie among genders can make global impact for superior products, more consumer enjoyment and a stronger gaming industry. 


Illustration and Cartoons

Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC)

AAEC is a professional association concerned with promoting the interests of staff, freelance and student editorial cartoonists in the United States. The AAEC sponsors Cartoons for the Classroom program designed to aid educators at all levels in teaching history, economics, social studies and current events. We have an annual convention in June to give member cartoonists an opportunity to meet and consider issues through panel discussions and guest speakers.

National Cartoonists Society (NCS)

NCS is the world’s largest and most prestigious organization of professional cartoonists. It was born in 1946 when groups of cartoonists got together to entertain the troops. They found that they enjoyed each other’s company and decided to get together on a regular basis.  Today, the NCS membership roster includes over 500 of the world’s major cartoonists, working in many branches of the profession, including newspaper comic strips and panels, comic books, editorial cartoons, animation, gag cartoons, greeting cards, advertising, magazine and book illustration and more.  Membership is limited to established professional cartoonists, with a few exceptions of outstanding persons in affiliated fields.

Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) 

Founded in 1971 by a group of Los Angeles-based children’s writers, the SCBWI is a non-profit, 501(c) 3 organization which is one of the largest existing organizations for writers and illustrators. It is the only professional organization specifically for those individuals writing and illustrating for children and young adults in the fields of children’s literature, magazines, film, television, and multimedia. Several of the most prestigious children’s literature professionals sit on the SCBWI Board of Advisors.

Society of Illustrators

The Society of Illustrators’ mission is to promote the art of illustration, to appreciate its history and evolving nature through exhibitions, lectures and education, and to contribute the service of its members to the welfare of the community at large.


Interaction Design (UX/UI)

ACM SIGGRAPH

ACM SIGGRAPH’s mission is to foster and celebrate innovation in Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques. The organization promotes its vision by bringing people together in physical, on-line, and asynchronous communities to invent, inspire, and redefine the many creative and technical artifacts, disciplines, and industries that are touched by computer graphics and interactive techniques.  Our purpose is to foster a membership community of people whose core values help them to catalyze the innovation and application of computer graphics and interactive techniques.

Interaction Design Association

The Interaction Design Association (IxDA) is a member-supported organization dedicated to the discipline of interaction design. Since its launch in 2003, IxDA has grown into a global network of more than 80,000 members and over 173 local groups, focusing on interaction design issues for the practitioner, no matter their level of experience.

International Council of Design

Ico-D is a non-profit, non-partisan, member-based network that leads creatively by facilitating dialogue between design platforms including professional, educational and promotional categories. Members of ico-D have current perspective on contemporary contexts, and an eye for collaboration across disciplines and with diverse global and local communities. User Experience Professionals Association

The User Experience Professionals Association (UXPA) supports people who research, design, and evaluate the user experience of products and services. UXPA holds yearly international conferences, publishes new findings through both the Journal of Usability Studies (JUS) and through User Experience Magazine, and has 50 chapters around the world. In 2004, UXPA established World Usability Day, which in 2011 was celebrated in 44 countries.

AIGA

AIGA advances design as a professional craft, strategic advantage and vital cultural force. As the largest community of design advocates, we bring together practitioners, enthusiasts and patrons to amplify the voice of design and create the vision for a collective future. We define global standards and ethical practices, guide design education, inspire designers and the public, enhance professional development, and make powerful tools and resources accessible to all.

American Advertising Federation

The American Advertising Federation (AAF), the nation’s oldest national advertising trade association, and the only association representing all facets of the advertising industry, is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and acts as the “Unifying Voice for Advertising.” The AAF also has 15 district operations, each located in and representing a different region of the nation. The American Advertising Federation protects and promotes the well-being of advertising. We accomplish this through a unique, nationally coordinated grassroots network of advertisers, agencies, media companies, local advertising clubs and college chapters.

Graphic Artists Guild (The Guild)

The Guild’s primary purpose is to help our members build successful careers by equipping them with the skills and support needed to compete more effectively in an ever-changing field.  Guild members are creative professionals and those studying to become creative professionals. We serve graphic and interactive designers, illustrators, animators, web programmers and developers.

Society of Publication Designers

The Society of Publication Designers is dedicated to promoting and encouraging excellence in editorial design. Our members are art directors, designers, photo editors, editors and graphics professionals. Since drafting its charter in 1965, the SPD remains the only organization specifically addressing the visual concerns of print and online editorial professionals. Editorial design plays a crucial role in shaping and documenting our common history; the efforts of the Society and its members also serve to educate and enlighten the public about the importance of magazines and online publications.

Association of Academic Museums and Galleries

The Association of Academic Museums and Galleries is the leading educational and professional organization for academic museums, galleries, and collections. In recognition of the unique opportunities and challenges of its constituents, the AAMG establishes and supports best practices, educational activities and professional development that enable its member organizations to fulfill their educational missions.

The Association of Art Museum Curators

Founded in 2001, the mission of the Association of Art Museum Curators is to support and promote the work of museum curators by creating opportunities for networking, collaboration, professional development, and advancement. In support of these aims, the AAMC Foundation seeks to heighten public understanding of the curator's role in art museums through professional development programs, awards, and grants. American Society of Media Photographers

The American Society of Media Photographers is the premier trade association for the world’s most respected photographers. ASMP is the leader in promoting photographers’ rights, providing education in better business practices, producing business publications for photographers, and helping to connect purchasers with professional photographers. ASMP, founded in 1944, has nearly 7,000 members and 39 chapters

National Press Photographers Association

The NPPA is the leading voice advocating for the work of visual journalists today. Founded in the days of sheet film box cameras and newsreels, our organization fights for the working news photographer, videographer and multimedia journalist in the Internet age. Our Code of Ethics stands for the highest integrity in visual storytelling. Our advocacy efforts put NPPA in the center of today’s thorniest issues of journalists’ rights to do their work — and to earn a living from their craft. Our ongoing education initiatives seek to equip our members and prepare the emerging generation of visual journalists in the face of an ever-changing media landscape. In light of these challenges, the work of NPPA has never been more vital than it is today.

IDSA is an organization of professional industrial designers primarily in the United States, recently IDSA has started chapters in Canada and in China. IDSA is also a member of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID).  The core mission and values of IDSA are to lead the profession by expanding our horizons, connectivity and influence, and our service to members, inspire design quality and responsibility through professional development and education, and elevate the business of design and improve our industry’s value.

The Society of North American Goldsmiths advances jewelry and metalsmithing by inspiring creativity, encouraging education, and fostering community. World Design Organization

As the international voice for industrial design, we advocate, promote, and share knowledge of industrial design driven innovation that has the power to create a better world. We do this by engaging our community in collaborative efforts and by carrying out our international programming—World Design Capital®, World Design Talks, World Design Impact Prize, World Industrial Design Day, and Interdesign.


Transportation Design

Automotive Design Organization (Auto DesignO)

The Southern California-based AutoDesignO is a professional association dedicated to advancing improved business relations, and communications within the design industry. Membership is available to design studios, staff and freelance designers, clay modelers, color and trim, digital design and modeling, fabricators, studio engineers, students, studio design and modeling managers, and similar design professionals, as well as industry suppliers, aftermarket companies, consumer groups, governmental bodies, temp and staffing agencies, media and PR, and other transportation design-related firms and organizations.  AutoDesignO currently has an international membership with members residing in Australia, Europe, South America, and the United States - from Southern California to Michigan.
